Mistral.

I think Mistral should create the AWS of Europe.

I understand that this is not really feasible right now because even though they are funded with billions and they are the European AI startup, you can't just displace AWS or any of the other hyperscalers. Mistral should probably stay laser-focused on making the best open-source LLMs. But if we do believe in the independence of the European Union, then we need to step up in this aspect too, and Mistral's products and services are currently getting to a scale where this could hopefully make sense for themselves and thus for us.

Even if they could, would they? Probably not anytime soon, given their list of subprocessors; it seems they are in deep contracts with the hyperscalers. But there is hope! Back in February of last year, a data center firm called Eclairion raised $50M, alongside an announcement that Mistral is training (at least one of their) models at that firm, Mistral clarifying they would like to rely less on the Big Tech companies.

So, can they? Who knows! But it would be rad if they gave it a fair shot. I depend on AWS and GCP for my silly ideas, and I pay the platforms that rely on that a pretty penny each month for all of my experiments. I would gladly pay double that for a European-focused one.

Now if all that data-center European talent who reside in the US at these hyperscalers could kindly move back to Europe, unite, and flesh this out with Mistral, that would be awesome (you're also welcome to join Lidl their initiative, of course)

(Also, Mistral, I spotted Cerebras Systems in that list of your subprocessors. I'm in love with Composer 1's speed. Please power your API with it, too.)

Can I keep you updated?

Starting in 2026, I'll share more focused notes on product design, technology, and business. If you'd like them in your inbox, leave your email below. I'm always happy to connect via email, Bluesky, or LinkedIn (blergh).
